And to think that the timing and percision needed, one wrong move could just turn everything haywire. Nureyev ballet premieres in Moscow. Pavel Rychkov / Bolshoi Theater The world premiere of the ballet by Ilya Demutsky, Kirill Serebrennikov and Yuri Possokhov played to a full house on Dec. 9 and 10. The two performances were sold out and the next premiere shows are scheduled for June 2018. A hugely anticipated ballet premiere, which was at the center of a big scandal in the summer and was under threat of being canceled, has finally taken place. The Bolshoi strictly controlled the sale of tickets to the two premiere performances of "Nureyev" with no more than two tickets allowed per customer, and buyers had to show their passports. On both evenings the hall was so packed with Russian celebrities that they could be seen even in the boxes in the third tier. The next performances are scheduled for June 2018, but you'd better book your tickets now. Here's why. 1. The return of 'grand ballet' Damir Yusupov / Bolshoi Theater Throughout the 20th century the standard set by Diaghilev's dance company reigned supreme in world ballet - one-act productions without a narrative plot. At the beginning of this century, thanks to renowned Russian choreographer Alexei Ratmansky, the situation began to change: the audience once again developed a taste for big productions, dramatic set designs and strong passions. The Bolshoi Theater was one of the first to start reviving the genre. In recent years, it has put on Ratmansky’s "Lost Illusions" and "Flames of Paris", Yuri Possokhov’s "Cinderella" and "A Hero of Our Time" and Jean-Christophe Maillot's "The Taming of the Shrew", all of which attracted much international attention. "Nureyev" is the latest step in the development of this trend. 2. Nureyev's 'debut' on the stage of the Bolshoi Theater Damir Yusupov / Bolshoi Theater It was choreographer Yuri Possokhov who suggested a ballet dedicated to Rudolf Nureyev. For him the figure of Nureyev has a particular significance. The dancer who transformed the perception of ballet was condemned in his own country, the USSR,  following his defection to the West while on tour in Paris in 1961. Newspapers and books referring to him were confiscated from libraries, and TV films featuring his performances were wiped. Nevertheless, the Bolshoi’s dancers - and the young Possokhov was one of them - knew the name through word of mouth in professional circles. And when on foreign tours, they would become aware of the global cult of 'Rudimania'. Professionally, Nureyev belonged to St. Petersburg: it was there he graduated from the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet and danced at the Kirov (now Mariinsky) Theater. And the Bolshoi is arguably the only one among the world’s most renowned theaters on whose stage he never danced. The ballet "Nureyev " symbolically fills this gap in his biography. 3. Renowned theater and film director Serebrennikov comes to ballet Mikhail Logvinov / Bolshoi Theater Since the 1930s, for the production of grand narrative ballets in Russia, a director was invited to work in tandem with a choreographer. The director helps to develop the libretto, create characters and work with dancers on the acting aspects of their roles. The tandem of Possokhov and director Kirill Serebrennikov emerged several years ago during the production of another premiere at the Bolshoi, "A Hero of Our Time". One of the most sought-after Russian directors, Serebrennikov has had a wealth of experience in musical theatre - he has staged Honegger's "Joan of Arc at the Stake" for Vladimir Spivakov's festival and "Hansel and Gretel" at the Stuttgart Opera, among other productions. 4. A unique ballet with singing and recital Pavel Rychkov / Bolshoi Theater Serebrennikov and Possokhov have developed a completely new form of performance. The ballet, devoted to a character whom many in the "Nureyev" audience knew personally or saw on stage, is made like a documentary - in the form of an auction which was really held a few months after the dancer's death. In "Nureyev", dancing is accompanied not just by music but also by text; and the choreography often merges with the singing of the choir, and the voices of the auctioneer and of the authors of letters to Nureyev with movement. Several hundred performers are engaged in the production and their curtain call after the performance takes about four minutes. 5. Several shows in one Damir Yusupov / Bolshoi Theater The ballet includes letters to Nureyev from people who were close to him, written today at the request of the production's directors. The words of Alla Osipenko, his dancing partner in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), Natalia Makarova, his co-student at ballet school, and two male dancers whom he brought to the level of top performers of the next generation - Charles Jude and Laurent Hilaire - are read out on stage. They accompany two pieces of choreography that are called just that - "Letters". These two solo pieces, female and male, are essentially two independent one-act ballets. Although forming part of the production, they can also be put on in their own right. Both belong to the best choreography of Yuri Possokhov, as do the Grand Gala scenes in which Nureyev changes roles, theaters and pupils. Having the distinction of one of the most distinguished graduates of Mme. Sofia Golovkina, Ms. Leonova was invited to join the prestigious Bolshoi Ballet Theatre Company right after graduation and was soon promoted to Prima Ballerina. During her career, Ms. Leonova starred in productions at the Bolshoi and worldwide, including Odette/Odile in "Swan Lake, " Giselle and Myrtha in "Giselle, " the Lilac Fairy in "The Sleeping Beauty, " and Aegina in "Spartacus. "  Mr. Alferov is a Senior Professor of Classical Dance and Pas De Deux at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy, and also holds a Ph. D from the Academy's Pedagogy Institute.  Mr. Alferov is the recipient of the title of Honorary Artist of Russia. His students dance with Russia’s leading dance companies including the Bolshoi Ballet, Theater of Stanislavski and Nemirovich-Danchenko, and the Kremlin Ballet.  In 2001, Mr. Alferov became the Head Master Teacher in charge of all performances at the Academy. Andrei Alferov Maya Ivanova is a graduate of the Perm State Choreographic College. From 1992-2013, Ms. Ivanova was a principal dancer of the Russian State Ballet Theatre of Moscow, where she performed leading roles in “Swan Lake”, “The Nutcracker”, “The Sleeping Beauty”, “Giselle”, “Cinderella” as well as in many others. In 2011, Ms. Ivanova received her graduate degree with honors from the Bolshoi Ballet Academy specializing in Pedagogy and Choreography.   Maya Ivanova After graduating from the Bolshoi Ballet Academy in 1991, Sergei Orekhov joined the Theater of Stanislavski and Nemirovich-Danchenko. There, he performed for over 20 years, dancing leading roles in productions including “Swan Lake, ” “Le Corsaire, ” and “The Snow Maiden. ”  Following his performing career, Mr. Orekhov was invited to teach at the Academy and has also led master classes around the world including in Italy, Korea, China, Brazil and Cyprus. Sergei Orekhov Nika Sergeeva graduated from the Bolshoi Ballet Academy with Honors as a Teacher-Choreographer in 2004. Since then, she has been teaching at the Academy and participating in numerous international projects, including staging“The Art of Fugue, ”  choreographed by David Bamban (Grand Prix Belua de la Don) with music by J., which debuted at the Bolshoi Theater in 2007. During her 22 years of performing at the Theater of Stanislavski and Nemirovich-Danchenko, Ms. Popova danced  leading roles in "Giselle, "  "Don Quixote, " "Swan Lake", " Les Sylphides, " and other ballets.  Ms. Popova graduated with highest honors in Choreographic Pedagogy from the Bolshoi Ballet Academy and is now a Professor of Classical Dance specializing in both male and female technique. Olga Popova Mikhail Sharkov was accepted to the Bolshoi Ballet Theatre Company immediately after graduating from the Bolshoi Ballet Academy in 1979. Mr. Sharkov is a recipient of the title of Honorary Artist of the Russian Federation and a senior instructor of classical dance and duet at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy.  Mr. Sharkov has starred in numerous ballets during his career including “Giselle, ”  “The Nutcracker, ” where danced the role of the prince, “Romeo and Juliet, ” and “Swan Lake, ” where he danced the role of the jester. Mikhail Sharkov Ms. Dozortseva graduated from the Bolshoi Ballet Academy as a student of Ms. Leonova, current Dean of the Academy.  She was invited as a soloist to Moscow’s State Theater of Classical Ballet of N. Olga Dozortseva Yevgeniya Kazeeva was a soloist at the Russian State Ballet Theatre of Moscow where she danced leading roles in “Swan Lake, ” “Don Quixote, ” “Paquita, ” “The Sleeping Beauty, ” “Giselle, ” “The Nutcracker, ” and many others. Since 2008, Ms. Kazeeva has been teaching at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy, specializing in Classical and Character Dance. He has performed leading and solo roles in both classical and modern ballets including “Swan Lake, ” “Giselle, " “Sleeping Beauty, ” “Romeo and Juliet, ” “Paganini” and many others.  Mr. Ryzhakov graduated from the Bolshoi Ballet Academy in 1995 with a major in Choreography.  Today he is one of the senior Professors at the Academy with a specialization in Pas de Deux and male technique.  Ilya Ryzhakov.

Good one! Beautiful! This large, wonderfully illustrated picture book of the Nutcracker is a must for ballet lovers and nice for any child to enjoy. The charming illustrations will make this story even more magical for those reading it. A great introduction to the classic ballet story. First sentence: It was Christmas Eve at the Stahlbaums' house, and like children everywhere, Marie and Fritz were so excited that they could feel their toes tingle. Their parents were decorating the Christmas tree before the big holiday party, and Marie and Fritz were not allowed into the great room until it was done. They jostled each other to sneak a peek at the glittering tree through the keyhole. Premise/plot: This is a picture book adaptation of the BALLET, George Balanchine's The.. It's been a long time since I've seen the Nutcracker ballet, so it was fun to read this picture book based on that ballet. I was a bit surprised that the main character's name was Marie and not Clara, but the story remained pretty much how I remembered it. The broken Nutcracker coming to life to fight the Mouse King, and the trip to The Land of Sweets, and all the beautiful dancing that is so much a part of the story. I could hear the music in my head as I turned the pages. This would be a lovely book to pair with a cd of the music for a young fan, or as a way to become familiar with the story before going to the ballet. I have a feeling this might be coming home with me for keeps. The illustrations of this book are spectacular. Each of the picture is a fantastic masterpiece of its own: the colour scheme is romantically soft, the characters are stunning and fairytale-like, the composition is surreal and beautiful. I love them all! The story is based on the world-famous ballet production. It is a nice story, but we probably can't expect it to make much sense or convey any deep meaningful lessons. I also thought it was odd that Herr Droselmeier was able to bring his nephew and the nutcracker to the party. If the nephew is the nutcracker how can they both be there. Otherwise I liked the book. Like I said the pictures were cute and I could see the sweets dancing. All in all a fun book. The facts at the end were very interesting. I can't imagine wrangling that many people backstage. this is a gorgeous rendering of the Nutcracker ballet story (not the original tale). Beautiful stylized illustrations closely follow storyline of the 1993 movie of the Balanchine production of the Nutcracker ballet. Fun facts in the back. I like the style of the illustrations, and they match a lot of the Balanchine costumes and choreography well*. The book accurately tells the Balanchine ballet version of the story. But some of the major beats of the story aren't actually in the illustrations. We don't see Marie initially meet Drosselmeier's nephew. We see the Nutcracker break, but Marie and Fritz are absent from that illustration. We don't see the nephew give Marie the bed, we don't see them dance together. We do see them say.. My three-year-old niece has loved to dance ever since she watched Leap. She was entranced by my video of the New York City Ballet's staging of The Nutcracker, so I wanted to give her a suitable Nutcracker book as a Christmas present. I was delighted that this book (I bought the reasonably priced board book, but there is also a larger, hardcover version) mirrors the NYCB performance. There's a lot of Nutcracker books out there, many of which reflect the 2018 Disney movie, but I preferred this one.. As a picture book, it was okay. It was a bit text dense and for Miss 4 the plot was a bit disjointed. I ended up making up my own words. May appeal more to adults (i. e. I really like the ballet so it has a different meaning to me than Miss 4). Miss 4 and I like to explore different books and authors at the library, sometimes around particular topics or themes. Although I have never seen that ballet, judging the book off illustrations and words, the book is pretty great. It is THE Christmas-feeling book that you have always wanted. The illustrations by Valeria Docampo are pure perfection. The Nutcracker Ballet has been my favorite ballet since I first saw it as a child of eight or nine. And the Land of the Sweets, it was my favorite part of the ballet. All those candies dancing, swirling and twisting around was a spectacle I’ll always remember. This Nutcracker tells the same story and Decampo’s illustrations brings the story alive on each spread. It may not be the same as seeing a live ballet, but it is so dramatically close I shivered from excitement. But first, I was angry—.. This edition is as deliciously exquisite as the play! I'd recommend this one over many others as the artwork is incredibly eye-appealing and delightfully enchanting. (Note: If you don't mind books that have push buttons to play music, I'd say there's an even better version you should get as it plays Tchaikovsky's glorious music.
