In a different version of the hit anime and manga series, the live action KAGUYA-SAMA: LOVE IS WAR film decimated the Japanese box office taking in over 2 billion yen (US18. 5 million. Our Japan Correspondent, Daryl Harding, has jumped into the warzone and reported his findings. In last year's winter anime season, KAGUYA-SAMA: LOVE IS WAR blew everyone with its wit, cleverness, and charm. I instantly fell in love with the characters and was waiting in bated breath for the next episode to air each week. When a romantic comedy manga series is getting its advertising push, they make an anime, and a live action film. From My Love Story! to Nisekoi, this practice has been happening for years, so to no ones surprise, KAGUYA-SAMA: LOVE IS WAR got the same live action film treatment. KAGUYA-SAMA is the story of two lovebirds who are too proud to confess to each other and instead wrap themselves up in games to force each other to express their love. As the school council president and vice-president, Miyuki Shirogane (Sho Hirano) – the top student at Shuchiin Academy – and Kaguya Shinomiya (Kanna Hashimoto) – the daughter of a wealthy Japanese conglomerate –, have to maintain a professional image while fighting this war of love. As a fan of the anime, its hard not to compare the film version of KAGUYA-SAMA s story to its animated counterpart. The film blazes past the anime story, taking out some of the best bits from the manga and cramming them into a two hour package. The moments you loved from the anime didnt have enough time to shine. Where the 12 episode series ended was only two thirds of the way through the film! This also meant the film rushed through certain arcs, giving the film way too many climaxes. While an anime episode can get away with having a few arcs and climaxes over a full season, a film needs to be structured with maybe a couple of these to not let the viewer feel overwhelmed. MILD SPOILERS FOR THE ANIME If youve seen the anime, you know the climax of the series was Kaguya not being able to go to see the fireworks during the summertime. Thats just one of the many climaxes in the film and is situated about halfway through the film and is by far the best part of the film. Having DAOKOs iconic voice singing over the fireworks as the crew are in the taxi was just magical. END SPOILERS What made the structure feel most out of place was the way it handled the individual stories that didnt have any bearing on plot significance, like actor Jiro Satos ( Death Note, Blue Blazes) brand of comedy. I love Jiro Sato, hes probably one of my favourite comedic actors in Japan, and he has a certain brand of comedy that he inserts into every role he plays. Due to the directors that I see usually direct him (like director Yuichi Fukuda who directed the Gintama live action films, Mr. Nietzsche in the Convenience Store) Satos humour is interwoven into the plot or fit with the style of the production. In KAGUYA-SAMA, which was directed by Hayato Kawai ( My Love Story. Nisekoi) Sato felt like a breath of lemon scented air in a room that already had a lovely orange scent. In saying that, if youre missing KAGUYA-SAMA from your screens, the film does a good job of recreating the same feeling as the anime. All the actors played their parts really well, easing themselves wonderfully as the students from Shuchiin Academy. Everyone from Ishigami to Kashiwagi (and her confession) were played better than what youd see from most J-dramas. The biggest highlight in the film were the chemistry between all the actors. You could tell they were having a great time playing these characters. A personal favourite relationship was Ishigami and Kaguya – if you enjoyed it in the anime, youll roll on the floor laughing at it in live action. While ultimately, the KAGUYA-SAMA: LOVE IS WAR live action film doesnt give that much more of a new experience than the anime series, what the film does differently, just by virtue of being in live action, makes up for it in spades. Whenever the actors are given free reign to enjoy themselves on screen, the film shines, but between those moments – whether it was when the scene was effects heavy, or some weird animation trip – the film falters. As a huge fan of the anime, I greatly enjoyed the film and would love to see a second one – but only after the second season of the anime has aired. REVIEW ROUNDUP + Actors seemed to have a lot of fun with the roles + DAOKO, as always, elevates the scenes her songs are in. To this day Princess Mononoke has my heart and I remember watching it with everyone, especially my brother when he came back from the army. Based on the tenth century Japanese folktale, The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter' this film opens with a bamboo cutter being attracted to a shining bamboo shoot; suddenly it grows and opens to reveal a tiny person. He rushes home and shows his with; then suddenly the tiny person starts to grow into a normal baby. There is something magical about her; the childless bamboo cutter's wife suddenly starts producing milk and the child, dubbed 'Little Bamboo' by the village children grows at an extraordinary rate as events cause a spurt of instant growth. As she grows she starts befriending the local children and believes she will stay with them forever. However her father has found more mysterious bamboo shoots; one containing gold and another containing exquisite silks; he takes this as a sign that she truly is a princess and uses his newfound wealth to establish himself and his family in the capital. Here, when she comes of age, she is given the name Princess Kaguya. She is trained in the ways of being a princess and powerful admirers who have heard of her great beauty seek her hand in marriage but she yearns for rural friends and sets her suitors impossible tasks. Eventually the Mikado takes an interest in her but again she declines… she then reveals that in a few days she must return home; not to the bamboo forest but to her true home far, far away.
Coming from Studio Ghibli's Isao Takahata it is not surprising that this film is both beautiful to look at and something rather different. The designs, which look like a mix of water colours and charcoal gives the film an ethereal feel that is entirely in fitting with the story. The story is told at a gentle, some might say slow, pace but there are bursts of energy where the animation becomes more chaotic in a way that beautifully captures the energy and emotion of the scenes. The story itself is rather melancholic; the bamboo cutter believes his 'daughter' will have a better life in the capital… and he certainly enjoys it there… but she just wants to be with her old friend and has no desire to be a princess. In many ways this makes it the opposite of many western fairy tales were a poor girl finds happiness when she meets her Prince Charming who whisks her off to a life of a princess.
In summary; I found this film to be an utter delight… a lovely but melancholy story that is beautifully told. While the story is suitable for all I suspect the gentle pace and long run time may mean it will be better appreciated by older viewers.
